System and method of an embedded ID transponder on the chassis of an electronic device for tracking purposes. The ID transponder is RF-readable externally by known-location RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) reader to track geographical location. The same ID and the corresponding device status changes are transmissible in-band when the device is network-connected. The information is received and collated at a data collation server by matching the device to its geographical location.
