| Technical Description: |
| This invention is a variable displacement hydraulic pump/motor for hybrid automotive applications that has been engineered to overcome the limitations in peak efficiency exhibited by previous pump/motor designs. The key design feature of the invention is a larger displacement angle that provides several advantages for mechanical and hydraulic efficiency. The larger displacement angle provides a longer stroke for each piston, which allows a reduced piston diameter, reduced barrel diameter, reduced bearings size, lower piston forces and lower ball-to-socket forces. Together, these features result in reduced friction and reduced cost, resulting in high efficiency over a wider range of displacement and speeds. In addition to the aforementioned advantages, the hydraulic pump/motor would have a lower weight, smaller volume and reduced manufacturing costs compared to previous pump/motor designs. |

| Industry Significance: |
| This patent is part of a bundle of EPA patents on hydraulic hybrid vehicles, and would represent a component of a hydraulic hybrid power train. The hybrid vehicle market is seeing significant growth, with new models coming out each year. Hydraulic hybrid technology has great potential to carve out a niche in the hybrid vehicle market as benefits in fuel economy are particularly significant for vehicles, such as urban delivery trucks, that are often operated under city driving conditions. | |||
| Potential Applications: |
| The invention could be incorporated as the pump/motor component of a hydraulic hybrid power system. An example of such a hybrid power system is described in EPA patent U.S. 5,495,912, which discloses a drive train in which an internal combustion engine provides prime power to a hybrid vehicle, while a subsystem consisting of variable displacement hydraulic pump/motors serves to store and release engine power from a hydraulic accumulator. The technology can be utilized with that specifically described in U.S. 5,495,912, or can be implemented with any hydraulic hybrid power system. | |||
| Partnership Opportunities: |
The lower cost of hydraulic hybrid technology in comparison to gasoline-electric hybrid technology has motivated companies to explore its development. Several, including Ford Motor Company and Eaton Corporation, are developing hydraulic hybrid vehicles with the EPA through cooperative research.
