Retractable Oxygen Reel with Case (Disposable and Reusable)

                Oxygen tubing lying on the ground while a person is ambulating is a fall hazard and also inconvenient for the person. The item I want to pursue getting a provisional patent is a retractable oxygen reel housed in side of a plastic case. The case would have the option of either a belt clip or a hook for attaching the case to clothing, an IV pole, a wheelchair, a walker, a scooter, crutches, or a purse/backpack.

                The person wearing the oxygen would attach the nasal cannula or mask tubing (external oxygen tubing) to oxygen adaptor on the outside of the case. A 3-foot length seems to be the best length to use when attached to the waist band, but the actual length is up to the consumer. The external tubing can be changed as often as the consumer wants to change it based on personal preference. Once the person has the case attached to the object of choice (waistband or mobility device), the consumer is free to move about without having to adjust the tubing that has been secured on the his or her face.

                Inside the case, there is a reel that contains the oxygen tubing. Opposite the external oxygen connector, there is an internal oxygen connector. The size of the reel and the size of the case are dependent on the amount of tubing the consumer needs. Four lengths that could be accommodated would be 15-feet, 25-feet, 50-feet, and 75-feet. Obviously, the longer the tubing, the larger the case would need to be.

                The case would have an exit hole in it for the tubing to exit so it can be attached to the oxygen source. The person would attach the tubing to the oxygen source. The case has a switch that has a lock function. When locked, the internal tubing is secured and will not release. When unlocked, the tubing will slowly release with slight tension and reel back in as the tension lets up until locked again.

Two Designs

Disposable and Reusable

The difference in the two is the reusable would have a different case. The external oxygen tubing can be changed as often as the consumer wants it to be changed. The internal oxygen tubing should be made out of medical grade polyurethane which should last for a year. The disposable case would be disposed of after one year of use.

The re-useable case would have a twist off lid. The internal oxygen would be disconnected from the oxygen adaptor on the inside of the case and the other of the tubing would be pulled through the exit hole so the reel can be disposed of. First, the new reel would have the internal tubing put through the exit hole so it is able to be attached to the oxygen source. Second, the new internal tubing would be attached to the oxygen adapter inside the case. Third, the reel would be placed inside the case. Forth, the lid would be twisted back on until secure. The product is now ready for use.

Consumers planning on just short-term use of oxygen may choose to use the disposable case. Hospitals may tend to use the disposable case for cost reasons and to ensure single-patient usage. This design allows for the easy changing of the tubing, which may reduce the risk of infection.
